#GVRAT1000k Update 7/21 - 7/27

7/28/2020

No pictures today.  We're going speed round as I want to get this in there for future reference.  Maybe I'll come back and update once we get into colder months here in MN.  60 Days of Hustle is still happening.  Go to the 60 Days of Hustle page here on my site and sign up today.  There's still lots of great content to be dripped over the next month or so.  Invite your friends and go through the 60 DOH with a group!  If you're not satisfied, I'll refund you every penny of your $8.

July 21 in the afternoon - faster than usual :)

8.46 miles which was longer than I planned on traveling.  It's been steamy here in MN and this was no different.

July 22 was split in two and involved walking all day with Hannah!

We walked 1.82 miles in Wayzata while Elli was at Cross Country and Hannah wanted to show me some cool trails at a local park so we knocked out 3.5 miles over the midday.  Check out my Instagram to see some videos of our time together @_jonhoward.

July 23 in the midday

This run brought me under 200 miles to go in The Great Virtual Race Across Tennesse.  It was steamy.

July 24 in the afternoon humidity

This was a mistake.  I biked my longest distance ever at over 25 miles and humidity was at 99.9%.  It was a poor rest day activity and has led to a prolonged recovery period which I'm sitting in now.

July 25 in the steamy afternoon

5.9 miles in the afternoon and .86 in the morning for a small family celebration.  Every mile counts.

July 26 in the steamy afternoon

6.19 miles and again, it was steamy.  About 4 miles into this run I decided it was time for a break.  I walked it in, reflected on my journey to this point and mapped out what the next four days would look like with no running to make happen.  There is plenty to do and I'm getting a bunch of stuff done!

July 27

I am preparing for a final push that will last the month of August.  I'll still walk a bit as to not burden myself with too much catch up.  I'll likely be about 20 miles behind the buzzard which will put me needing to average around six miles per day every day in August.  I haven't run much in the mornings but may switch my schedule up so I can get some miles done in cooler temps.  That will likely be good for energy levels.

60 Days of Hustle

I created this 60 DOH so you could come with me on my journey across Tennessee.  There is still time to join and I guarantee if you join now you'll get your $8 worth and much more!  We talk Vision, Block/Rhythm, Action, Nourish and Energize.  JOIN TODAY!  I'll provide you with a full $8 refund if you're not fully satisfied.

As many of you may know there is currently a 60 Days of Hustle happening.  Folks are getting daily accountability and traveling with me along my journey across Tennessee.  You can still join me as well.  Just visit the 60 Days of Hustle page on this website.  It ONLY costs $8!!!  So, I will be going live on Tuesday morning to give an update and answer any questions the group might have.  That happens in the private Facebook group you’ll be directed to once you JOIN.  Just read everything on the 60 Days of Hustle page, which will only take a little over 3 minutes.  I timed it and I actually made a small edit in that time too.  There’s a podcast episode if you’d like to listen to that.  It’s 8:30 and the last 90 seconds is just reflective music, so, you could go to www.jonhoward.co/60daysofhustle and take in all the information in just a little over three minutes of your time, a little over 11:30 if you count the podcast.  Then, make your decision on whether or not you want to join the 60 Days of Hustle.  Ok, enough about all that.  Let’s get to the #GVRAT1000K UPDATE!

July 14 in the afternoon

You can always learn more about each individual run by connecting on Strava.  I'm still in need of a few chunk days.  This was one of them.  It was steamy.

July 15 in the evening

There were a couple baseball games I attended this week.  My Son needs to be at the field an hour before game time to warm up so I use that opportunity to run sometimes.  Delano, MN has a beautiful complex and I think I did six or seven laps.  I got stung by a bee on this run too and the Trojans came out victorious.  It was a perfect night for baseball!

July 16 in the evening

Picture
We had a bear at our birdfeeder the night prior which is where this picture was taken.  Once again I was able to get in some miles before baseball.

July 17 in the afternoon

A few makeup miles today as I'm still behind the buzzard.  I've made up nearly 22 days since early July.  I didn't take June as seriously as I maybe should have but we had some other cool things going on.
Picture

July 18 was a day of rest

Picture
I took Saturday off to travel South for a family wedding.  It made for lots of driving but my legs needed a break anyway.

July 19 mid day

It's fun for me to play around with different images.  I usually just focus on product images for my other business, the one that makes me money.  This is different.  I get to play around with nature and gear and physical stuff.  I like the photography piece I guess is what I'm saying.

July 20 in the afternoon

Picture
This is the way I felt after my run today.  The woods haven't changed.  They're the one place I can get in my car and go and everything is the same as it was six months ago.

Why do I only charge $8 for the 60 Days of Hustle?

Somebody asked me a really good question the other day.  I actually personally called her and invited her to join the 60 Days of Hustle for eight dollars.  She asked, "Why only $8?"  I gave it some thought and mentioned that I would be talking about the other programs I have for sale a bit so it was a part of the funnel for my business.  That's true but I haven't mentioned anyone should buy anything and won't until I let folks know that there are options from here.

Here's why I only charge $8.  I don't need the money.  That's not why I'm spending 10 hours a week on this.  I've learned folks are more likely to commit and see some change if they have at least a little skin in the game, even if it's just $8.  The price is going to double next time BTW so get in now!  And... it works!  I can't sit on this.  My other business actually suffers a bit because of the time and energy I'm putting into this but it works y'all.  It's worked for me many times and that's why I'm going through it again with folks now.  I go through this stuff four or five times a year and every time I take something else away from it.  Pay $8!  At some point in the next six weeks something might just click and everything will change for you.  Just visit 60 Days of Hustle.

My shirts came from the #GRVAT1000k headquarters!  The old wolf hunts with the teeth he's got.

#GVRAT1000k Update

July 7 in the early afternoon

I have been running mostly later in the afternoon but today was a bit different.  I could feel the difference in the air and I met Pete on this run.  Pete is an older gentleman.  He was riding his bike and it was fun to tell him the story of "The Great Virtual Race Across Tennessee".
Picture

July 8 in the early afternoon

Another 8+ and another early afternoon run.  My projected went from September 9 to September 4 finish date last week so progress is being made.  The plan is to have my last mile run on August 31.  I'm kind of a glutton for punishment and like to get the most out of my ultra experiences:)
Picture

July 9 was a day of rest

Instead of running today I finished up a couple of projects around the house including these flower boxes I made so Hannah can plant some flowers.  I painted the boxes white to they can color their own cool designs on them and it'll be great once the flowers bloom!  My body needed the rest after 11 straight days, most of which consisted of six plus miles.
Picture

July 10 in the evening

This picture is my daily gear.  There is a variety of salt options in the clear bag and the black pack is a waist belt for tp, salt, phone and keys.  Miles seem to be getting faster even though each day I feel a bit more sore heading out the door.  It's getting tougher to hit the trail.  These lows come with ultra running though and they too shall pass.
Picture

July 11 in the evening

Get some miles in was my only concern today.  That's about all I have to say about that run.
Picture

July 12 in the afternoon

90% of my miles will be done on the same stretch of trail.  Distances will vary as I know how to add a mile here or a mile there.  This might have been my best feeling run of this whole deal so far.  Even though it wasn't cool there was a chill in the air that one would only feel by spending many hours day after day outside.  The flies still sucked!
Picture

July 13 during Elli's basketball practice

It was my anniversary!  These were some of the first bigger miles done on a track not Elm Creek Park Reserve.  There were no flies and very few hills.  I like the woods better but six laps around a middle school would work just fine for the miles I needed.

GVRAT1000k UPDATE!

July 1 in the am

Picture
Hannah and I walked around down by Lake Minnetonka in Wayzata, MN for a bit while Elli had cross country practice.  These miles count towards a finish and they do add up, one step at a time.
The gumball picture came from a pin image I created for the other business I own with my wife.

July 1 in the afternoon

Picture
I picked my route as I ran and stumbled upon this nice little 8.5 mile loop.  I'll use this run again to maybe buy myself a day off.  The flies were thick.  I ran without a shirt for a bit and quickly put it back on.  This is hopefully the last time this summer I forget to bring a bandana with me on the trail.

July 2 in the afternoon

Picture
This picture I took as I was preparing to leave the house.  It takes me far too long to leave the house but with the heat I want to make sure I don't forget anything.  It's a bit like the old "measure once, cut twice" saying.  When it's this hot and humid outside and you're 4.5 miles from the car it's not pleasant at the least and potentially quite dangerous if you don't have what you need.  Lot's of salt and a little water.
This run I left with what I thought would be 15 miles worth of fuel.  I probably could have made it that far but would use what I learned about that particular fueling combination later in the week.

July 3 in the evening

Picture
After running the past couple days in the heat and humidity it was quite refreshing to run in the cool of the night.  We had a small family party we attended, then I came home and did a short run.  It was still steamy, but much cooler than mid afternoon to be sure.

July 4 in the heat of the afternoon

AFTON SOLIDARITY RUN

Picture
On the Saturday around the 4th of July each year there is a trail race held here in Minnesota called Afton Trail Run.  There is a 50k option and a 25k option.  It's always a great weekend and it's one of the few true local ultramarathons  in the Twin Cities area.  This year due to COVID19 concerns Afton was cancelled.
After eating far too much food at a feeding that lasted around two hours and resulted in that feeling you get when you've eaten way too much food I went for a run.
As I recovered from eating I mapped out what the rest of my afternoon would look like.  I mentioned earlier in the week I thought I had enough fuel for 15 miles and stopped at 9.  Today, having had that dry run a couple days prior, I planned a bit differently.  I figured I'd have a steady drip of cake, pie and cookies to run on and loaded up some electrolytes.  I brought two bottles.  One had about 3x sweat mixture and the other one was about one full sweat.  I had concentration options and I also had my hydration pack full to the top with cool water.
I am happy with the pace and it actually felt like I was moving slower than I was.  I was just starting to really settle in to the pain when I arrived back at my car, drove home and said goodnight to my family.

July 5 in the afternoon

Picture
I'm just trying to settle in and get the minimum for a few days here.

July 6 in the afternoon

Picture
Running starts to feel a bit like it's a part of you, a part of your job.  Every step, whether running or not, has value and legs "feel" all the time.  Most everything becomes about moving forward.  I'm excited  as I continue on this journey.  I'm excited to see how deep can I go?  What will I learn about myself this time?  Will I have the honor of impacting others in a positive way?  Don't know.  Just. Keep. Moving.
